care4teeth a dental site on prevention to improve our health and wellbeing
YOUR TEETH AND YOUR HEALTH

After the age of 25, you are more likely to lose teeth from gum disease rather than tooth decay. Apart from poor oral hygiene, these are the main reasons

Genetic
Smoking
Diabetes
Stress
Obesity
Nutrition
Lifestyle

Of these only genetics and type 1 diabetes are inherited, the rest are a result of your life choices. Smoking increases the probability of early tooth loss by between three to seven times, and diabetes three times. Bleeding gums can reflect a systemic problem, and mouthwash will not cure it only disguise it in the long term.

From the list, it can be seen that if you improve your gum health, your general health will improve, and you will live a healthier longer life. What better motivation could you have?

None of my patients regrets not starting smoking earlier?
You are seven times more likely to lose your teeth early, which is your choice and severely compromises any procedures carried out by the dentist, or hygienist. Your expensive implants are more likely to fail.

Smoking causes numerous cancers, cardiovascular disease, and stokes.
Sadly, in my experience, most patients stop immediately after one of the above incidents. Why wait?

Oral cancer, when diagnosed early, results in the loss of a few teeth and reasonable prognosis, within six months it can rapidly progress, and treatment involves losing part of your jaw and a grim prognosis. If you have a mouth ulcer that doesn't start to heal in two weeks, book in to get it checked. Oral cancer is one of the top 10 prevalent cancers, and has a high mortality.

Some mouthwashs helps reduce inflammation of your gums.
They don't remove the cause, they can help, but you need to use your brushes better. Ideally apply it directly as instructed by your dentist or hygienist. Used routinely as mouthwash they can stain your teeth.

Other Flouride mouthwashes are useful. We always advise to spit out toothpaste and not to rinse afterwards for the beneficial effect of the fluoride to make the tooth surface stronger. If you use a fluoride mouthwash, it's more beneficial at a time different to when you use your brush.  It is useful to use in a Phillips airfloss as demonstrated by clicking on the picture link.
