Finding an NHS dentist
How to register — and what to expect.
Everyone is entitled to register with an NHS dentist. Here is how to find one taking new patients, how to register, what happens at your first appointment, and what to do if you can’t find one nearby.
Find a dentist taking new patients
Finding an NHS dentist accepting new patients used to be the hard part. Search on Dental Choices for a list of local NHS dentists currently taking new patients, allow it to use your location, then work down the list and call each to check. Practices don’t restrict registration by postcode like GP surgeries — you can choose one that’s convenient, near home or work, and even register at more than one.
Register as a new patient
You can’t register by email — call the practices on your list to ask about their process. Most will ask you to visit in person to fill in a form covering your name, date of birth, address, contact details and a fairly detailed medical history including any medication. You don’t usually need your NHS number. If a practice tells you they’re not accepting new patients, politely ask them to update their NHS profile.
Your first appointment
There’s usually a wait of several weeks. You may be asked to arrive early to complete forms, and you’ll have a full examination before any treatment — treatment is then planned and booked for a later date. Most practices have a strict missed-appointment policy, so once you’ve booked, be sure to attend and arrive on time.
If you need urgent treatment
Registering can take weeks, so if you can’t wait, see an emergency dentist for basic urgent care — then still register for a full check-up and treatment planning.
