Digital Denture Scanning – A Practical Option for denture repairs and more…

This video explains what to do if you can’t get a dental nurse or dentist to visit your care home.

The simplest option is to take the denture to a dental practice and ask if they offer a scanning service. If they do, they’ll charge for it, but you’ll then have a digital record of the denture which can be reproduced if needed.

Alternatively, some providers can bring a mobile scanner to your care home. They can scan both your resident’s teeth and their dentures, creating a digital record for future reference should anything go wrong.

Many people are unaware of how powerful these devices can be. They don’t just allow for replacement dentures; they open the door to a wide range of solutions for care home residents, including:

* Replica or spare dentures
* New partial dentures (including flexible or cosmetic options)
Preventive trays, similar to bleaching trays only with a preventive varnish
* Anti-snoring devices

This approach effectively creates a **digital prescription** of a denture that your resident is already comfortable with. Replicating this is far quicker and less disruptive than making completely new dentures — saving time, money, and reducing stress for the resident.

Dental nurses are now permitted to carry out intraoral scanning, and many modern scanners can even help assess early tooth decay.
While a dental nurse cannot fit a denture, the digital scan they take can be sent to a dental technician, who designs the denture digitally. It can then be fitted by a dentist or clinical dental technician (denture therapist).
Alternatively, an existing denture can be scanned at a dental practice to create an accurate digital copy — ideal for repairs, replacements, or replica dentures.
The video below shows just how quick and simple the process is with today’s digital scanners.

Updating and Repairing Dentures — A Modern ApproachThe video below demonstrates how a dentist can modify and adjust existing dentures to improve comfort and function.
It’s generally recommended that new dentures are made every 5 to 10 years, as gums naturally shrink and denture teeth wear down over time.
In a care home environment, this process can often be streamlined to just two visits, making it far more convenient for residents and carers alike.
This approach has been successfully implemented by Imelda, a Clinical Dental Technician from Comfort Dentures in Ireland.
